Founding of the Museum

Founded in the year 2005, the Museum of Food and Drink first took root as an ambitious idea in the mind of Dave Arnold. Dave, a pioneer in the food industry, felt that there was a tremendous untapped potential in exploring the history and culture surrounding what we consume. He dreamt of a place where senses would be at the forefront – a museum that didn’t just look at food but engaged with it. Seven years later, in 2012, the dream took tangible form as a Kickstarter-fueled, roving culinary exhibit, known as the Museum of Food and Drink Lab. Yet, Arnold’s sight remained on one goal: to give the burgeoning institution a permanent home.

Early Exhibits and Events

Through pop-up events and experimental exhibits, the museum was able to offer a taste of Arnold’s vision from the get-go. In 2013, Mofad Lab caused a stir with its debut exhibit, Boom! The Puffing Gun and the Rise of Breakfast Cereal. The interactive demonstration using a puffing gun to create puffed cereals captivated audiences, offering insight into the industrialization of food.

Following this, the museum hosted a series of successful events, each one a testament to its ethos of interactivity and engagement. From exhibits that focused on the cultural history of Chinese-American cuisine to explorations of the fermentation process behind our favorite drinks, every event reflected in-depth knowledge and a sincere curiosity about the evolving relationship between food, culture, and science.
